Common Uses For Zirconia Wide Belts

Zirconia wide belts are designed for sanding hardwoods and metals with a wide belt machine. Zirconia wide belts are commonly used to remove surface material, deburr metal, and finish workpiece surfaces. They’re often used for furniture and instrument manufacturing but can be used in many other industries.

Zirconia Vs Aluminum Oxide Wide Belts

In addition to zirconia wide belts, Red Label Abrasives also manufactures aluminum oxide wide belts. You may end up comparing the two and wondering which abrasive grain would be best for your application.

Compared to aluminum oxide, zirconia is stronger, more durable, and more aggressive abrasive grain. Zirconia was the strongest abrasive grain on the market before the creation of ceramic belts. Zirconia is the better choice for sanding harder materials like hardwoods and metals. The aggressive cut the grains provide will sand these harder materials faster.

Zirconia wide belts have a higher price tag compared to aluminum oxide wide belts, but they also have a longer lifespan. You’ll end up saving money in the long run because you’ll have to buy belts less frequently.

    Elizabeth W. ★★★★★

I switched to these after burning through standard belts on a maple project, and the Y-weight backing makes a noticeable difference in durability. The 25 x 85 size fits my sander perfectly and the zirconia cuts through knots without loading up.

    Christopher E. ★★★★★

After fighting with a cheap belt on some stainless steel, this 25 x 85 inch zirconia belt cut through like butter and held its edge for a full run of heavy grinding. The Y-weight backing really does seem tougher than what I'm used to.

    Avery I. ★★★★★

I was skeptical about the Y-weight backing at first, but after a full day of flattening an oak workbench, the belt barely shows wear and still cuts aggressively. It tracked straight the whole time, too, which is more than I can say for the last few belts I tried.
