Common Uses For Zirconia Wide Belts

Zirconia wide belts are designed for sanding hardwoods and metals with a wide belt machine. Zirconia wide belts are commonly used to remove surface material, deburr metal, and finish workpiece surfaces. They’re often used for furniture and instrument manufacturing but can be used in many other industries.

Zirconia Vs Aluminum Oxide Wide Belts

In addition to zirconia wide belts, Red Label Abrasives also manufactures aluminum oxide wide belts. You may end up comparing the two and wondering which abrasive grain would be best for your application.

Compared to aluminum oxide, zirconia is stronger, more durable, and more aggressive abrasive grain. Zirconia was the strongest abrasive grain on the market before the creation of ceramic belts. Zirconia is the better choice for sanding harder materials like hardwoods and metals. The aggressive cut the grains provide will sand these harder materials faster.

Zirconia wide belts have a higher price tag compared to aluminum oxide wide belts, but they also have a longer lifespan. You’ll end up saving money in the long run because you’ll have to buy belts less frequently.

    David ★★★★★

Spent the afternoon flattening some oak tabletop glue-ups and the Y-weight backing really earns its keep—zero fraying at the edges even with heavy pressure. Cuts fast and stays true, which is exactly what I needed for this zirconia grit.

    George D. ★★★★★

This belt has held up through a full day of flattening oak table tops with no tearing or glazing, which is more than I can say for the last few I tried. The Y-weight backing really does make a difference under heavy feed pressure.

    George V. ★★★★★

The 37x60 size fits my wide belt sander perfectly, and the zirconia grit chews through oak like butter without bogging down. That heavy Y-weight backing really does hold up—I've run it on steel frames after the woodwork and the edge is still sharp.
